We won’t spend much time explaining this fundraiser idea, as it is pretty much summed up for you in the title.  Basically, have students vote for teachers and/or administrators they would like to see participate in the adult spelling bee.  Verify with the most desired teachers/administrators that they would be willing to participate in the spelling bee.  Promote and then hold the event.  It’s as simple as that.  To raise money, consider the following options:

  • Sell tickets to the event.
  • Have students and other teachers sponsor each participant in the adult spelling bee.  Each participant would represent a different cause.  All of the donations would go to the winning participant’s cause.

We have seen a variation of this take place at the college level: Professors and students have competed against each other in a quiz bowl event, an event in which opposing teams try to answer the greatest number of trivia questions correctly.  To level the playing field, questions about celebrities, music, etc. were introduced into the competition.
