This event is a GREAT fundraiser.  It can be a little difficult to organize, but the return on investment can be very large.

Why is this different than other food fundraisers (like the classic spaghetti dinner fundraiser)?  Well, not only will the food likely be better than a standard spaghetti dinner, but this fundraising idea accomplishes something most other fundraisers struggle to accomplish: It gets people interested in (or at least exposed to) your organization who would otherwise wouldn’t be.  This happens because an exotic meat barbecue is so unique and hard to come by that it will attract people who are (at least at first) just interested in the meat.  It’s not like a nice dinner fundraiser, which is harder to come by than a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, but still something for which there are many substitutes (and thus won’t attract many non-supporters).  Just be sure to advertise your exotic meat barbecue in ways that target non-supporters and people who might like meat.  We recommend contacting well-organized, predominately male groups like veterans groups, men’s clubs, etc.  A room full of potential NEW supporters (in fact, all of them will all be at least one-time supporters, as they will have purchased a ticket) is very exciting.

How do you make money? The most simplistic of business model relies on selling tickets.  Ticket prices can be high.  You want them to be high enough to make money off of the people who are coming to your fundraiser strictly for the meat (before you convince them to become a recurring supporter, that is) but low enough that you don’t alienate your regular supporters.  You could even have two different prices if there are clear membership statuses already in place (i.e. you could have one price for members and one price for non-members).

What kinds of meat should you offer? Almost anything that you can get your hands on (that is ethically sourced, of course).  Some types of exotic meat that are frequently sold by exotic meat vendors include: Antelope, alligator, buffalo, black bear, crocodile, iguana, ostrich, llama and wild boar.

Where do you get such meats?
There are lots of exotic meat companies.  Search around on the internet and you’ll be sure to find good options.  Be sure to see if you can get a portion of your order as a donation (possibly tax deductible) or at least at a significantly reduced price, as the meat is going to be used for a fundraiser.
